Joseph Green Wisdom was born on 28 or 29 December 1848 in Marion County, Oregon to Napoleon and Elizabeth (Simpson) Wisdom. The parents were married in 1843 in Platte County, Missouri, and crossed the plains sometime in the mid-1840's (Napoleon's Donation Land Claim only states that he arrived prior to 1850).

At 18 years of age, Joseph was working in Kings Valley, Oregon, then moved to Walla Walla, Washington, then back to Oregon where he worked in Portland and Oregon City until he moved, once again, to Walla Walla in Washington Territory.

Camilla Ann Wisdom, nee Irwin, wife of Joseph Green Wisdom, was born 14 February 1851 in Indiana; Rowen Irwin was her father. She left there at 10 years of age when her family moved to Nebraska; they later (about 1868) moved to Kansas and in 1873 moved west to Walla Walla in Washington Territory. There she was married to Joseph G. Wisdom on 21 September 1874.

After their marriage, Joseph and Camilla moved to eastern Oregon, later on to Idaho, then back to Oregon. In the 1880 census they are found in Sterlingville, Jackson County, Oregon. The Wisdoms were involved in saw milling and farming. In 1897 they came to western Lane County and lived at Point Terrace for about five years before moving to Glenada in 1902. Joseph Wisdom worked as a sawyer according to the 1905 and 1910 censuses.

The Wisdoms had five children: James, born in 1876; Zerada, born in 1879 and who later married John T. Steear; Omar L., born in 1877; Joseph (called "Jodie"), born in 1881; and Charles, born in 1883. All their children were born in Oregon according to census records. Son Charles was later married to Mary Ruth Stuevens, daughter of D. Henry and Emma (Landschooft) Steuvens, both buried in the Glenada cemetery. A grandson, Lt. Col. Selwin Deroy Wisdom (son of Omar), a local hero, was killed in the Vietnam War in 1966.

Camilla died on 19 January 1918 at the family's home in Glenada after a "long illness." Camilla had joined the Primitive Baptist Church when she was about 16 years old. The services for her funeral were held in Glenada's Evangelical Church with Rev. Caves officiating.

A handwritten note found in the Omar Wisdom file at the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum is interesting but bears no relation to the timeline provided in Camilla's obituary. The note reads: "His [Omar's] mother Camilla Wisdom was raised by Indians & later by the Holdens in Glenada."(1)

Joseph Wisdom died on 4 August 1919 at his home in Glenada. He was mayor of Glenada at the time of his death and had served in the Heceta Lodge and Irene Encampment of the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows. One of the appraisers of his estate was Frederick Hargreaves, also buried in the cemetery.
