A. Statton Hammock of Front Royal, Virginia died May 27, 2008, at the age of 102. The son of John D. and Mattie B. Hammock, Mr. Hammock was born March 2, 1906 in Woodberry, Warren County, Virginia during the administration of President Theodore Roosevelt.

Active in public and civic affairs for many years, Mr. Hammock served as a member of the Front Royal Town Council from 1962-1970, serving as Town Treasurer during six of those years. Mr. Hammock also served as a member of the Front Royal-Warren County Industrial Development Authority, the Warren County School Board Electoral Committee, spearheaded the very first "clean-up" campaign for Front Royal and environs, and was a lifetime member of the Fire Department.

Mr. Hammock had a life-long interest in conservation and outdoor recreation. Together with Front Royal resident Hal J. Meredith, he was responsible for legislation passed by the State of Virginia to guarantee access to the great fishing streams throughout the state. An avid camper and fisherman all his life, he and his beloved wife Millie traveled to many of our great U.S. State and National Parks. With his fishing friends he especially enjoyed the waters of the Shenandoah, the Chesapeake Bay, and Southern Atlantic Coast. He was still hiking in the Shenandoah National Park at the age of 101. He was a member of the Izaak Walton League of Warren County for more than 45 years, and served as its president. The local chapter house of the League at Browntown is named the Meredith-Hammock House in honor of these long- time outdoorsmen.

Mr. Hammock had a long career as a U.S. Postal clerk-carrier and Superintendent of Mails at the U.S. Post Office in Front Royal. Prior to that, he served as a Town Police Officer and worked at the local silk mill.

A member of the First Baptist Church since 1927, he served prominently as Sunday School Superintendent and as chair of the Board of Deacons.

Mr. Hammock was married for 74 years to Mildred Cooley Hammock, who predeceased him. He had one sister, Severine Miles of Baltimore, who also predeceased him. Surviving are two children, Joyce H. Carson and her husband Joseph of St. Clairsville, Ohio, and Allan S. Hammock and his wife Virginia of Morgantown, West Virginia, six grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren.

Mr. Hammock seemed to have found the secret to a long, happy life in loving his family, his friends, his neighbors, his community, and the outdoor world around him.

Friends will be received by the family, Friday, May 30, 2008, from 6 - 8 pm, at Maddox Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 pm, at the First Baptist Church, followed by interment at Prospect Hill Cemetery, and a reception at First Baptist Church.

Pallbearers named are: James Carson, Joseph Carson, Bradford Hammock, Statton Hammock, Alan Nichols, James Spering, and Michael Williams.

Donations may be made to the Warren County Chapter of the Izaak Walton League at P.O. Box 556, Front Royal, VA 22630, and/or the First Baptist Church, 14 West First Street, Front Royal, VA 22630.
