Horace Irving Lapham was the first born child of William B. Lapham (1838-1925), a Civil War Veteran, and Emoline Pauline Reynolds (1844-1886).

When Horace was about a year old, his father moved his family to Arlington, Van Buren Co., Michigan, where his father was a farm worker. By about 1871, Horace's father moved his family once again, this time to Nebraska, where his father was a farmer. Because of his father's chronic illnesses resulting from his military service, he and his siblings undoubtedly worked on their father's farm before setting out on their own.

On the 7 February 1895, Horace married Anna Margaret Leishman (1875-1951), the daughter of Robert Leishman (1847-1900) and Mary Melinda Everett (1845-1911), in Crawford, Dawes Co., Nebraska. Between 1896 and 1910, Horace and Anna had eight children: Nellie, Frederick, Wilbur, Charles, Orville, Eunice, William, and Theodore.

At some point after 1920, but before 1927, Horace moved his family to Oregon, to either McMinnville or Portland. Horace died on the 18 September 1927 at E. St. Hospital in McMinnville from exhaustion, which was a complication from a bone plate operation following a fracture of his left femur.
