CHILDREN OF Melvina Hendry and Mowry Aldrich Arnold:

"In 1868, Mowry A. Arnold opened the first savings bank in Wyoming, which continued only until 1873."

page 800.
"Mowry A. Arnold is of the Rhode Island family which settled in that state in 1635; migrated to Colorado in 1865, and mined and taught school at Central. In 1867 he came to Cheyenne, Dakota Territory (WY) and taught. His wife [Melvina Hendry] was elected Superintendent of Public Schools of Laramie County, WY Territory in 1871, holding the office two years."

Addendum:
M. A. Arnold is sketched in the above history for his engagement as a major stockman in WY Territory. Judging from the obelisk gravestone he placed at the grave of his wife, Melvina, he acquired wealth. By 1883, he was superintendent of the NL Livestock Company, located on the Upper Crow and Horse Creeks of Laramie County.

The winter of 1887 and a downturn in market price devastated the cattle industry in WY Territory to the point that it never recovered. It is likely Mr. Arnold incurred substantial loss. By 1900, he had relocated to Montana to be a surveyor.

DEATH NOTICE

Cheyenne Daily Leader
3 May 1904

Mowry Aldrich Arnold, well known to old timers of Cheyenne and one of the founders of the city, died at his home in Providence, Rhode Island, April 28th, at the age of 75 years. His career was a varied and adventurous one. Speaking of is residence and Cheyenne and Wyoming, the Providence Journal of April 29th had the following to say:

[Providence Journal]
"In 1867 Mr. Arnold went to Cheyenne, Wyo., being one of the founders of that town. [There] he followed the real estate and banking business for a considerable time. With his wife, who was also a teacher, he established the first public school. He was for a time in a private bank .and was cashier of the First National Bank of that town in 1871 and 1872.

The following year he became interested in cattle and for a number of years was engaged in stock raising in Wyoming and Montana, until the settling of the country made the business unprofitable. He then became a surveyor in Montana and was for a number of years official surveyor of Choteau County. About 4 years ago he returned to this city, since which time he had been living on Arch Street."
