Suggested edit: Rebecca Jane Cranfill Reed, (named for her maternal grandmother Rebecca (Horn) Canter) was born May 6, 1834 and died July 11, 1909 at the age of 75. According to Gail Cranfill Whittington, she first married Alexander Smith* in Greene County, Illinois on November 30, 1851. Rebecca and her husband, Alexander, probably came to Texas with her parents about 1856. Alexander had a son, James Smith, born in 1849, from his first marriage.
Rebecca and Alexander's children were Laura Catherine Neal, 1853-1913, ID 26976223; Mary E. Smith Atchison-1854-1943, ID 40983052; Luella Smith House* 1856-1945, ID 25251922, Patterson Cemetery, Jerseyville, Illinois.
Tragedy struck the Smith family with the outbreak of the Civil War…Alexander* was killed by canon fire near Little Rock, Arkansas, not long after writing a letter on December 7, 1862 to his wife Rebecca. The tattered last letter he wrote has been preserved by Rebecca's family.
Gail Whittington wrote on page 46 of her book , that "Rebecca and Alexander had a daughter, Ella, (Luella Smith House, who lived with her grandparents after Alexander was killed in the Civil War. " Hilda Fry, Cranfill relative. Contributor: Hilda Fry (49236545) • [email protected]
