In the spring of 1896 Edsil became very ill. The doctor told him to move to a warm dry climate. He had a brother living in Thatcher, Arizona, so decided to move there. The family arrived by train 23 December 1896 and stayed with Edsil's brother" Uncle Joe", until they could find a place to live. The family moved to Central, Arizona, in 1898 to farm.
Eleven children were born to Edsil and Alice: Joseph Newberry, Myron Erastus, Alice Ann (Dodge), Emily Priscilla (Shurtz), Gilbert Charles who died as a child, Eliza Mae (Martin), George who died at age 2, twins Darus and Dora (Lee), Rhoda Belle (Overson), Delva Naomi (Cluff).
