James, age 17, enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 25 March 1862 at Grahamville, South Carolina. He was mustered as a Private in Company K, 4th South Carolina Cavalry (Rutledge's Regiment). He was wounded at the Battle of Cold Harbor on 30 May 1864. Union troops captured him at Old Church, Virginia on 30 May 1864 and sent him to Lincoln General Hospital in Washington, District of Columbia, where he was received on 4 June 1864. He died at the hospital on 8 July 1864. Cause of death is noted as "exhaustion from wounds". (bio by Martha Reid 19 UDC)
