Resided in Peach Orchard, Kentucky; enlisted February 16, 1863, as a private in Co. H, 39th Kentucky Infantry; died in the General Hospital of typhoid fever.

He was a farmer by trade and lived in very rural Buchanan County, Virginia. His wife Sarah was the daughter of Isaac & Eva Rebecca Neace Jackson.
Most of the information about him has been extracted from Civil War military records. In February, 1863, John rode his horse or took a john boat, it is unknown which, down the Tug River to Peach Orchard, in Lawrence Co., KY, in order to enlist in the Army, and was mustered in.
There are no known pictures of him, but one source reports he was 5'11".
