William Cornelius,son of Moses and Anne (Dodson) Cornelius (she married George Phillips abt 1778 after Moses died), was a Revolutionary War Soldier. William was married to Lettice, maiden name unknown (Cargill not proven). Their graves are outlined by large stones and headstones and surrounded by the graves of family members. This cemetery is on private land and access has been denied. Photos were taken by special permission in 1994. The DAR placed a plaque for him at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Onenota, later moved to the Easly Church of the Brethren Cemetery.∼William Cornelius, the patriot ancestor of all Cornelius found in Blount County, came to this County around 1818 and settled south of present day Oneonta. He is buried in the old family cemetery in the woods, south of present day Oneonta High School, along with about 15 family members. This VA marker was placed here by the DAR in honor of him. Because the VA required that their markers be placed in "maintained" cemeteries, it was originally placed in Oak Hill Cemetery in Oneonta, and later moved to Easley Church of the Brethren, where many Cornelius descendants are buried. A couple VA markers can also be found here honoring Cornelius men who fought in the Civil War, but their burials are unknown, or not maintained.
This Memorial was created to compliment his real resting place, until a movement can be started to register, restore, and maintain the old family burial ground for future generations to enjoy.
