OBITUARY: St. Edward Advance, St. Edward, NE dtd 14 Mar 1946
"Services Held At Genoa for Joe Flaherty"
Joseph D. Flaherty, aged 57, prominent bachelor business man of Genoa, died suddenly at about 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning at the Genoa Tavern which he operated in partnership with Elmer Elm. A coroner's inquest gave the cause of death to have resulted from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the chest. Mr. Flaherty, who was quite successful in business in recent years and previously in
his farming enterprises, had been in failing health for the past 3 years, and it is believed extreme mental distress provoked bya chronic stomach ailment, prompted the act which caused his untimely passing.

The funeral was held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Genoa Tuesday morning, Rev Father Wm. Mulligan of Omaha, officiating in the private service. Interment was beside his parents in the Evergreen cemetery at St. Edward.

Joseph Daniel Flaherty was born at Ladd, IL, a son of M&M Michael Flaherty, on Febr. 22, 1889, and passed away at Genoa, NE, Mar. 9, 1946, aged 57 years and 15 days.

Joseph came to Nebraska with his parents in 1902 and the family settled on a farm on the Skeedee northwest of Genoa, where he secured his elementary education in the rual schools. He completed his high school education at Spalding college and later attended Grand Island business college.

Following the death of his father in 1909 he owned and operated the Flaherty farm, continuing ownership of the family homestead until his death. For a short time he operated an automotive business along with other interests in St. Edward, and then was in business at Beemer for a year, when he came to Genoa to engage in business about 5 years ago.

Mr. Flaherty enjoyed a wide acquaintance and was a jovial character. He was ambitious and efficient, and only his closest friends were aware of his failing health which caused him such distress in recent, and his death came as a great shock to the entire community.

He is survived by 4 sisters, Mrs. T.D. Scanlan, of Ogallala, NE, Mrs. Herman Fischer of Omaha, NE, Sister Marie Genevieve and Sister Mary aAmbrose of Sinsinawa, WI; and one brother, Frank, of Genoa, NE.
His parents, two brothers, Edward and William, and one sister, Julia, Mrs Wm Roach, preceded him in death.

Relatives attending the rites from out of town were Albert Flaherty and M&M Elmer Flaherty and son, Paul, of Ladd, IL; M&M T.D. Scanlan of Ogallala, NE; Mrs Catherine Fischer, M&M Joesph Tesar, and Mrs. Wm Hewitt, all of Omaha, NE; and Sister Marie Genevieve and Sister Mary Ambrose of Sinsinawa, WI.
