Elizabeth Cahill, daughter of Daniel and Mary Cahill, was born February 20, 1863 at Peru, Illinois where she lived until February 12, 1885, when she was united in marriage to Jeremiah T. Flaherty. Thery came to a farm southwest of St. Edward where they resided for 42 years.
In April, 1926, Mr. and Mrs. Flaherty moved into St. Edward and lived there until Mr. Flaherty's death in November 1930. Mrs. Flaherty continued her residency in St. Edward until March, 1942, when failing health caused her to close her family home and go to Spokane, Washington, where she lived with her daughter, Mrs. V.W. Murray until the time of her death.
To Mr. and Mrs. Flaherty, 10 children were born, two of whom died in infancy.
Those surviving are Frank J. of St. Edward; Mrs. V.W. Murray of Spokane; John of Elgin, Nebraska; Leo of St. Edward; Raymond of Omaha; Frs. F.J. O'Brien of Spokane, Washington; Paul of Chicago, Ilinois.
Other survivors include her brothers, John and James Cahill, both of St. Edward, and her sister, Mrs. Thomas Regan of Omaha. There are 14 grandchildren and one
great-granddaughter.
Mrs. Flaherty had a faith that neither trials nor great sufferings could weaken.
She was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church. in early years, she attended Mass in homes whenever possible and in reminiscing in later years, felt it a great privilege to have been one of the early pioneers who helped establish the first Catholic Church in this community.
Funeral services were held at St. Edward Catholic Church on Thursday morning, September 18, at 9:00 a.m. with Rev. James Brady officiating and Rev. William Mulligan, her former pastor, assisting.
