The oldest of three daughters, Dorothy was born August 4, 1930 to John Nielsen and Irene Aplegren. She would be joined later by Virginia and Darlene and they would remain close sisters and friends throughout their entire lives. Raised on the west side, Dorothy attended Onequa Elementary, Jackson Junior High, graduating in 1949 from West High School. With her dad playing matchmaker, Dorothy met and then charmed the socks off of Robert Draper, an eligible bachelor 10 years her senior and in 1951 they were married. Two years later they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised four children, Craig, Kevin, Cory and Teri, at the mouth of Millcreek Canyon and provided what can only be described as an idyllic childhood for their kids.

Robert died unexpectedly in 1971 and in 1974 Dorothy married Sarell Thatcher. They remained together for six years until "Thatch" also passed away. Vowing to remain single, Dorothy kept herself busy until 14 years later she succumbed once more to love and married Robert Fashimpaur in 1996. There were together 12 years until Dorothy's death on May 26, 2008. Dorothy worked much of her adult life for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in their publishing division. She was the ideal employee, always on time, a conscientious worker, and with just enough mischief in her to keep things interesting. Always a homemaker first, Dorothy loved nurturing her family. She kept a clean, organized home where there was always a good dinner on the table and plenty of time for people. She loved Twinkies, reading cook books, soaking up the sun, dancing the 2-step, listening to marking band music and was an expert gift receiver. At the age of 60 she became the oldest person in the state of Utah to bungee jump. She enjoyed the plunge so much that she climbed the tower and went a second time. She had the excellent gift of giving love with the ability to bring people back together. She was a good and steady friend, kind and generous, thoughtful and fun. Above all, she was true to her calling of mother and for that we are eternally blessed. Thank you Mom.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Bob Fashimpaur; her sons, Craig, Kevin (Wenlyn Walters), Cory, all of Salt Lake City; and her daughter, Teri (Eric Zenger) of Huntsville, UT. She was the proud grandmother to Zeke, Christopher (Susie), Hailey (Anthony Dickamore), Tessa Zenger and Cassidy (Chris Michaelis), Chance, Tyler and Austin Fashimpaur. Also surviving are her step-children, Kim (Joel Lundstrom), Kurt, Trent and Kelly Fashimpaur, and her sisters, Virginia Park Carpenter and Darlene (Mark) Gould.
