Kendall was the son of Jonathan Miller & Abigail Plumlee Miller.

He and his brother Clinton Miller both served in the Civil War in the 15th Regiment, Illinois Voluntary Cavalry. They traveled from Tennessee to Illinois to volunteer because Tennessee would not take them because they were too young.

On 30 May 1868, he married Jennie Lynn Williams.Together they were the parents of 13 children-Henry Clinton, James 'Uncle Jim' Monroe, William 'Gag' Agog, Ella (Rinehart), Mary 'Vada' Nevada (Anthony), Ollie (Rinehart), George 'Dewey' Dewey, Allie Marie (Anthony), twins Charles 'Ed' Edward and Fred, Orlie, and Lena Eva (Colvin).
