Muriel Helen Barsness passed away at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital at Alexandria, Minnesota on Tuesday morning, July 4, after an illness of about three months. She would have been twenty years old July 15. She leaves to mourn her passing, her mother, Mrs. Helen Barsness of Hoffman, Minn., and her brother, Arthur, attending the U.S.N.R. Midshipman's School at Columbia University, New York. Her aged grandmother, Mrs. Jorgine Christopherson of Urness Township, and many other relatives also survive.

Muriel was born July 15, 1924 in Alexandria and was baptized by Rev. Edward Livingstone at West Moe Church. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith by the Rev. C. E. Hanson of Alexandria. She was a member of the West Moe Lutheran church and Luther League. She has made her home with her grandmother, Mrs. Christopherson except for those periods in which she attended high school in Alexandria and St. Cloud and the St. Cloud Teachers College.

Muriel was an exceptionally pleasing and attractive personality and she had a brilliant mind. She was a leader of many activities in high school and college and was the recipient of many awards. She graduated as salutatorian of her high school class, and she served as editor of the high school paper and received both D.A.R. and Eastman awards based on character, leadership, service and scholarship. In the two years of college work permitted her she took an active part in publications, dramatics, student council and was awarded this June the Stephen Somsen Scholarship.

Services were held Thursday, July 6th, 1944 at 1:00 p.m. from the Engstrom Funeral Home and at 2:00 p.m. from the West Moe Lutheran church with Rev. A. T. Tjornhom officiating with Rev. Ivar Sandberg assisting. Honorary pallbearers were: Adell Papermaster, Virginia Ziebel, Rosceil Kollmann, Mary Cary, Ethel Jo Gruber and Constance Brainard, who were all classmates at the St. Cloud Teachers College. Active pallbearers were: Oscar Christopherson, Joseph Christopherson, Ole Barsness, Alfred Barsness, Oscar Barsness, Norman Barsness. Interment was in the church cemetery.
