Dorothy Barsness, age 78, of Hutchinson, Minnesota, passed away on Sunday, November 5, 2000 at Hutchinson community Hospital. A memorial service was held Wednesday, November 8, 2000, 11:00 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Hutchinson. Interment was held on Thursday, November 9, at 11:00 a.m. in West Moe Cemetery in West Moe Township, Minnesota with Pastor Larry Olson officiating.
Dorothy June (Engel) Barsness was born on June 22, 1922, in Brainerd, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Edward L. and Louise S. (Kroeger) Engel. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Brainerd. Dorothy attended the Harrison elementary School and Washington High School in Brainerd. Following graduation from high school, she attended Winona State Teachers College, graduating in 1945. Dorothy then obtained the position of girl's physical education teacher at Hutchinson High School in Hutchinson. She taught there for three years, until she was united in marriage to Arthur J. Barsness on August 1, 1948. In subsequent years Dorothy taught girls' physical education, English, and classroom drivers training at Brownton High School in Brownton for a short period. She also worked as a sales clerk in two Hutchinson children's stores. However, most of her life was devoted to homemaking, rearing her children, and caring for her husband.
Dorothy passed away at the age of 78, on Sunday, November 5, 2000 at the Hutchinson Community Hospital. Dorothy is survived by her husband, Arthur J. Barsness of Hutchinson; sons: John Barsness and wife Jeanette of North Mankato; David Barsness and wife Louise of Victoria; four grandchildren; sister, Ruth M. (Engel) Osell and her husband Harry N. of Monticello. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Louise Engel and daughter Ann Marie Barsness. Arrangements were with the Dobratz-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Hutchinson.
