JOHN SCHWEITZER, October 20 1940. A long time resident of this section and one of our most respected citizens, John Schweitzer, passed away at his home two miles northwest of Ellsworth Sunday after a nine day illness of pneumonia complicated by a paralytic stroke on Saturday. He had not been feeling well the week before but had become better and gone out again, suffering a relapse which is blamed for his fatal illness.
The funeral took place from St Mary's church Wednesday morning with a Requiem Mass being said by Rev. Fr. Wm. Klinkhammer of East Grand Forks Minnesota, a brother-in-law of the deceased. The sermon was preached by the pastor, Rev. Fr. Scheuring. Also assisting in the sanctuary during the Mass was the Rev. Fr. Raymond Redder of Dundee Minnesota, a friend of the family. Pall bearers were: L. N. Riley, Frank Egan, Charles A. Barnes, Francis Carey, John Fagan and Charles Lenz. Interment was in the family lot in St Mary's cemetery beside a child that died in infancy. The funeral was a large one, many friends and relatives from a distance coming to join the community in paying last respects to the memory of this good man who was held in high esteem during a long and useful life of over 70 years, 50 of which were spent in Nobles county. John Schweitzer was born at St Lawrence Wisconsin January 7 1870. His parents were Mr and Mrs Andrew Schweitzer. After coming to Nobles county in 1890 he was married at Adrian Minnesota to Miss Margaret Klinkhammer. For eight years following their marriage they lived on a farm in Little Rock township. They then bought the former Flynn farm, the NW Quarter of Section 30 Grand Prairie township which has since been their home. To this couple were born eleven children, one dying at birth and the other ten growing to adulthood, all of whom together with the widow mourn the passing of a father and husband. The children are: Aloysius, Nokomis Illinois; Christina, Boone Iowa; Julia, Mrs George Sieve, Wilmont Minnesota; Agatha, Circle Montana; Antoinette, Mrs George Burke, Jersey City, N. J; Esther, Mrs Byron Koch, Sioux Falls, SD; Edna, Minneapolis; and Leo, Werner and Norbert of the Ellsworth community. He is also survived by a brother in Milwaukee Wisconsin, two step-brothers and five step-sisters all of the Allentown Wisconsin community.
Thus from our midst has been taken another of our venerable citizens. He was a Christian gentleman, a good practical Catholic man, attentive to his duties, possessing a studied conservatism that kept him from making costly errors and acquiring a philosophy that made him a source of encouragement and advice for many. He went to his death fortified by the last rites for the living of his church and to which he had given so much of his time and labor and gravel materials for the parish property improvement.
In civic duties he was the same and served in several offices of trust in his township and school district in an efficient and trustworthy manner.
The News joins the multitude of friends and relatives of the deceased in offering to his bereaved family sincere expressions of sympathy.
