Doctor for 42 Years Buried in East Texas

FAIRPLAY, Panola Co., Texas, April 30.—Funeral services were held at the Waldrop Cemetery near here for Dr. Robert James Liles, 77, who died at his home at Tyler.

Dr. Liles was born at Fairplay the son of Martin Liles, a native of South Carolina, and Laurany Moody Liles of Georgia. He received his medical training at the St. Louis (Mo.) Physicians and Surgeons' Medical School and interned at Memphis (Tenn.) Hospital.

He practiced forty-two years, beginning by answering calls on horseback, and progressed successively to a bicycle, a buggy and an automobile. His fees more often than not were in livestock and foodstuffs. Dr. Liles estimated he delivered at least fifty babies each year he practiced.

Surviving are his wife, with whom he recently celebrated his fifty-eighth wedding anniversary; five sons, J. D. Liles of Tyler, Tom O. Liles of Chicago, J. H. Liles of San Antonio, S. I. Liles of Palestine and Walter Liles of Colorado, Mitchell County; three daughters, Mrs. Texanna Robinson of Palestine, Mrs. Paul Wysinger of Grapeland and Mrs. Julian Costelaw of Henderson; one sister, Mrs. Robert Waldrop of Marshall; one brother, Benjamin Liles of Cushing; forty-six grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.
