Louis was born to James (Jens) Peter Olsen and Ane Kirstine Nielsen Olsen on July 28, 1866, in Ephraim, Utah. He was the oldest child of five children. He had two brothers and two sisters. James (1869 - 1936), Mary (1874 - 1933), Emma (1878 - 1880), Alvin (1881 - 1883).

Louis spent the first part of his life in Ephraim, Utah. When he was 17 his father died. His mother moved the family to a small farm just north of the Manti temple hill.

Louis married Pheba Ann Mackey in the Manti temple on January 22, 1890. They are the parents of nine children.

Louis went on a mission to the Southern States. He was a bishop for many years in the Sterling ward. He also was bishop of the Rochester, Utah, ward. Louis was a farmer.

Louis died at the age of 60 from uranic poison at the Salt Lake hospital.
