Dea. Joseph Wright, s. of Thomas Wright, Esq. & Mary Cranbrook, b. after Dec. 17, 1639 prob. in Wethersfield, Conn. He d. testate in Wethersfield Dec. 17, 1714, Æ 75 (1899 known g.s. inscription).

During his lifetime he held several prominent civic positions in developing the town of Wethersfield as well as the Province of Connecticut. He was also a deacon of the Wethersfield Congregational church. As depicted by the image attached to this memorial, Joseph's former gravestone no longer exists, but did exist when the Wethersfield Village, or Ancient Burying Ground, cemetery was fully inventoried in 1899 by Edward S. Tillotson and published under the short title "Wethersfield Inscriptions." (see below)

On Dec. 10, 1663 in Wethersfield, Joseph m. 1) Mary Stoddard, eldest known child of John Stoddard and Mary Foote, b. Mar 12, 1643/4 in Wethersfield. She d. Aug. 23, 1683, Æ 40. They had the following children recorded in Wethersfield:

• i. Mary Wright, b. Apr. 15, 1665, d. Apr. 25, 1735 in Wethersfield, Æ 71 (g.s.); m. Dec. 10, 1685 in Wethersfield, Jacob Griswold, s. of Michael & Ann Griswold, b. Apr. 15, 1660 in Wethersfield. He d. testate July 22, 1737, Æ 78 (g.s.). Ten children of the family.

• ii. Elizabeth Wright, b. Nov. 18, 1667, d. after Feb. 6, 1721/2; m. Apr. 3, 1690 in Wethersfield, Sgt. John Curtis, Jr., s. of Sgt. John & Lydia Curtis, b. Dec. 10, 1667 in Wethersfield. He d. testate Nov. 7, 1712, Æ 45 (g.s.). Eight children of the family.

• iii. Capt. Joseph Wright, Jr., b. Feb. 14, 1669/70, d. Sept. 2, 1756 in Colchester, Conn., Æ 87; m. May 21, 1701 in Wethersfield, Mary Dudley, dau. of Joseph Dudley & Ann Robinson, b. circa 1678 in Guilford, Conn. She d. in Colchester Nov. 25, 1755. Nine children of the family, all b. of record in Colchester. Mary Dudley's mother, Anne Robinson, was the sister of Mary (Robinson) Latimer and Sarah "Saint" (Robinson) Latimer of Wethersfield, daus. of Thomas & Mary Robinson late of Guilford, Conn., latter the writer's ancestors.

• iv. Sarah Wright, b. May 16, 1674, d. Sept. 18, 1706 prob. in Guilford, Conn.; m. by 1701 Stephen Hand, s. of Joseph Hand & Jane Wright of Guilford, b. Feb. 8, 1672/3 in Guilford. Stephen d. in East Guilford (now Madison), Conn. Aug. 14, 1755. He m. 2) Nov. 16, 1708 in Guilford, Sarah Pierson, dau. of Rev. Abraham Pierson & Abigail Clark, b. circa 1675 in Newark, New Jersey. Four children of the Hand family by Sarah Wright and two by Sarah Pierson.

• v. Dea. Thomas Wright, b. Jan. 18, 1675/6, d. in Oct. 1760 in Wethersfield, Æ 85 (g.s.); m. 1) Oct. 4, 1705 in Wethersfield, Prudence Deming, dau. of Ebenezer & Sarah Deming, who d. in Wethersfield Oct. 24, 1706; m. 2) Nov. 3, 1715 in Wethersfield, Abigail Churchill, dau. of Lieut. Benjamin & Mary Churchill, b. Feb. 18, 1680/1 in Wethersfield. Her death is not of record.

• vi. John Wright, b. May 19, 1679, d. intestate Mar. 8, 1713/4 in Wethersfield, Æ 35; m. July 4, 1706 in Wethersfield, Mercy Boardman, dau. of Lieut. Jonathan Boardman & Mercy Hubbard, b. July 4, 1687 in Wethersfield. Four children of the family, the youngest two dying in infancy. Mercy m. 2) before Feb. 1725/6, an unknown man named Heacock or Heacox.

• vii. Jonathan Wright, b. June 18, 1681, d. testate in Newington, Conn. betw. Mar. 29 & July 14, 1740; m. Mar. 26, 1706 in Guilford, Conn., Hannah Hand, sister of Jonathan's sister Sarah's husband, b. July 10, 1683 in Guilford, who survived her husband. Nine children of record b. in Wethersfield.

Following wife Mary's death, Dea. Joseph m. 2) Mar. 10, 1684/5 in Wethersfield, Mercy Stoddard, his unmarried sister-in-law, the younger sister of his first wife Mary, b. Nov 1652 in Wethersfield. She d. Jan 2, 1714/5, Æ 63. They had the following two children:

• viii. Dea. Benjamin Wright, b. Dec. 6, 1686, d. Oct. 1753; m. June 18, 1719 in Wethersfield, Hannah Holmes, dau. of Jonas & Sarah Holmes, b. Dec. 25, 1694. She d. after 1768. Seven known children of the family.

• ix. Nathaniel Wright, b. Oct. 16, 1688, d. Feb. 1773; m. Mar. 20, 1711/2 in Wethersfield, Anne Deming, dau. of Sgt. Jonathan Deming & Martha Buck, b. Sept. 20, 1690 in Wethersfield. Six children of the family.
