William served in the Union Army during the Civil War in an Infantry unit that garrisoned New Orleans. Posting a Confederate battle flag on this memorial is inappropriate. Those that claim service in the Confederacy while citing the service records of William T Boutwell are confused, they were two separate individuals.
William was living with his son William Richard "Dick" Boutwell when he died.
For those that practice "monkey see, monkey do" genealogy, he wasn't known as "Bill" he was always "Pinc Boutwell" as was his son Willis Pinckney Boutwell.
