David William Mapes

May 27, 1924 — January 19, 2014

David William Mapes, age 89, of Marshall died Sunday evening, January 19, 2014 at his home in Maplewood of Marshall in the loving care of his wife and daughter.Mr. Mapes was born on May 27, 1924 in Assyria, Michigan to Lee and Josephine (Hamilton) Mapes. He had been employed for 40 years at the old Clark Equipment Company in Battle Creek. During WWII, David served in the United States Army.On June 12, 1948, he married the former Betty C. Romine in Marshall at the First Baptist Church. She preceded him in death on October 12, 1983. Dave found love again and married June Pugh on January 19, 1985 in Englewood, Florida.David was a member of the Marshall First Baptist Church, the American Legion Post #79 and the V.F.W. Post #4073. He was an avid golfer and bowler and had participated in numerous leagues in the Marshall and Battle Creek areas. He enjoyed reading, playing cards and square dancing.David was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Although he never spoke the works, I love you; he left no doubt about his feeling for them through his loving actions and kind deeds. He always enjoys being there to lend a helping hand. In an act of kindness, every Sunday, Dave would provide transportation for a group of Bellevue women taking them to Wendy's restaurant for an evening of fun and fellowship.He is survived by his wife, June of Marshall; daughter, Deborah (James) Leahy; step-sons, Duane (Marian) Pugh and Winton (Paula) Pugh; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Jeremy Cohen) Leahy, Gregory (Roxie Harrington) Leahy, Angela (Daniel) Isaacs, Matthew Leahy and Andrew Leahy; a great grandson, Samuel Jennings; step grandchildren, Kurt Pugh and Paulette (Travis) Everhardus and a step great grandson, Zachary Roode. He is also survived by a sister, Leah (Bob) Berkimer and several nieces, nephews and cousins.He is preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Mapes; sisters, Doris Beam, Beulah Bland and Beryl Murphy; and brothers, Dale Mapes and Dene Mapes.The family is planning a memorial gather to be held this summer. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the Great Lake Hospice Care. Assistance with memorials is available at the funeral home. Arrangements are by the Craig K.
