Loys was the fraternal twin of Louise Arnold, a teacher killed along with many students and other teachers in the New London (Texas) School explosion March 18, 1937. Loys was a kind, generous, well-respected man.

Loys and his wife, the former Clara Clementine Woolf, were the parents of three sons: James Walter "Jimmy" Arnold; John Paul Arnold; and William Richard Arnold.

For decades, Loys and Clara owned and operated the Arnold Automotive Garage in downtown Arp. After Loys's death, Clara continued to operate the business until 2007. The yellow brick building still stands, much the same as when Loys toiled there day in and day out.
