Francis Xavier Gamerl was born in Laaber, Kingdom of Bavaria (modern-day Germany) to Gamerl. He immigrated to the United States in 1865.

Frank was married to Elisabeth Koehlmeyer on Oct. 23, 1865 in Waterloo, Illinois, and they had four children. After she died, Frank was married to Kate Grimes on June 22, 1884 in St. Joseph, Missouri, and they had a son, Philip. After a divorce, Frank was married to Karoline Wilhelmina "Lena" Bode on Nov. 30, 1889 in St. Joseph, Missouri, and they had a son, Martin.

Frank owned a series of saloons in St. Joseph. According to the old family tale, Jesse James was one of his regular patrons.

Frank died of chronic myocarditis when he was 79 years old.
