Rachel V. Seals, daughter of Robert N. and Susan E. Seale, was born November 18, 1869, at Rose Hill, Va., and departed this life on April 5, 1949 at Sabetha hospital, Sabetha, Kansas. She was the oldest of 11 children - six boys and five girls. Two brothers preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, William Bartley, four brothers: James L. Seale, of Rose Hill, Va.; Edward J. Seale, Baxter, Kentucky; Ernest E. Seale of Los Angeles, Calif., and E. J. Seale, Hurrah,Okla.; three sisters, Mrs. Lillie Hounshell, Rose Hill; Mrs. Huldah Bales and Mrs. Minnie Davenport, Caldwell, Idaho, and a host of nieces and nephews who mourn her departure.


She was married to John F. Bales on June 22, 1895, at Rose Hill, Virginia. They came to Kansas on August 16, 1895, where she spent the rest of her life. To this union was born one child, a son, Robert Chester, who passed away in infancy.


On May 25, 1920, her husband, John Bales, passed suddenly to the great beyond at Powhattan, Kans.


On the 25th day of November, 1925, Rachel V. Bales and W. M. Bartley were united in marriage at Junction City, Kansas. They have resided near Wetmore ever since.


Rachel became a member of the Silver Leaf Baptist church at Rose Hill, Va. in early childhood. She has held to that early girlhood faith down through the years. She has been a good neighbor and a good wife. Hers has been a life filled with Christianity and usefulness.


The funeral was held at 2:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Wetmore Methodist church with the pastor, Rev. JohnTaylor in charge. Music was furnished by Mrs. Vera League and Mrs. Ada Cawood at the piano. A large number of relatives and friends were present and floral tributes of love and respect were liberal and beautiful. Burial was in the Powhattan cemetery.


The pallbearers were Lee Cashman, Gene Cashman, Clyde Bartley, Uberda Bartley, Don Stricker and Max Bartley.
