Son of Beverly Lafayette Holcombe and Eugenia Dorothea Vaughn (Hunt) Holcombe; brother of Lucy Holcombe Pickens (called the Queen of the Confederacy, whose portrait appeared on Confederate currency), grandson of Major Philemon Holcombe, a Revolutionary War hero. He was deaf at an early age.
