Joe Benjamin Burton

Joe Benjamin Burton, 83, of Perkins, died Saturday, July 10, 2004, in Perkins.

Services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in Eden Chapel. Pastor Max Rudd will officiate. Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Perkins. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He was born in New Mexico June 10, 1921, to Frank and Alpha Parnell (Ethridge) Burton. He married Rena McKnight May 28, 1943.

He moved to Oklahoma when he was one year old. He attended High Prairie and Ripley schools. On Sept. 2, 1941, he enlisted in the United States Army. He served for 15 months overseas in England, France, Belgium and Holland. In 1945, he was honorably discharged. The couple celebrated their 61st anniversary in 2004. He worked as a farmer and for Owen and Wallace Plumbing. He enjoyed gardening and sharing it with his friends, neighbors and family. He also liked raising cattle, working in the community and helping his neighbors.

He was predeceased by his parents, infant daughter and three brothers, Orval, Clifford and Wayne Burton.

He is survived by his wife of the home; two daughters, Kaye and Dave McLemore and Camilla Stephens, all of Stillwater; four grandchildren, Lori Vaughan and Shawn McLemore, both of Stillwater and Deanna Harjo and Shannon Smith, both of Grove; six great-grandchildren, Josh and Jessica Harjo, Kelsey and Cooper Smith and Brandi and Destiny Vaughan and three sisters, Lottie Sharpton of Stillwater, Essie Doyle of Tulsa and Opal Courtright of Perkins.

Pallbearers will be Mickey Smith, Shawn McLemore, Jim Axtell, Ted Hazelton, Charles McKnight and Lee Ray Murlin. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Albright, Ray Nettles, Don Perciful, Harland Wells, Ron Burton, Layne Burton, Troy Courtright and John McKnight.
