Irma Hofmockel, age 90, of McHenry and formerly of Batavia, IL, passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 17, 2023. She was the loving wife of Donald L. Hofmockel for 67 wonderful years. Beloved mother to Bill, Beth, and Jim. Cherished grandmother to Tim and Anna. She will be dearly missed. A memorial service will be held at a later date.


Irma was born in 1933 in Wesermünde, Germany. In 1935 her parents, Wilhelm and Irma Genzen moved back to New York City. She graduated from 8th grade at PS 83 in Queens, Julia Richmond High School in Manhattan and a Bachelor of Arts from Queens College in 1954.


She was teaching 5th Grade in East Williston on Long Island when she met Don in 1955. Less than a year later, Don and Irma were married on August 12, 1956, and moved to Rome, NY, where Don was stationed in the USAF.


In 1957 they moved to New Jersey where Irma taught the 5th grade and they began their Family. Irma was the first woman elected to the Board of Trustees of the Chatham, NJ United Methodist Church. In 1976, the Family moved to Batavia, IL, where Irma taught in the Fox Hill Home and the Kane County Youth Home for 14 years, and was an active member of the Batavia United Methodist Church.


In addition to teaching, Irma loved to travel, gardening, and supported a number of charitable activities and volunteered for many causes, including adult reading programs. In lieu of flowers, the Family asks that you please love and support those who are in need.
