James was married and at the time of his death, his wife was a patient at the Utica insane asylum as she was suffering from a nervous condition and depression. His eleven year old daughter was living with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Caleb Thornton of Macomb. His remains were returned to his Uncle's home in Ogdensburg and burial took place on December 21. He was also survived by his parents who lived at Black Lake.
