George H Barfield, a life long resident of Merced county, passed away at Mercy Hospital at an early morning, death being caused by an affliction of the heart. Although he had been falling in health for several months, Mr Barfield had been able to be about until Thursday afternoon and his death was entirely unexpected, the news of his passing coming as a severe shock to his numerous friends.
George Hardwick Barfield was born on the Merced river near Hopeton on January 30, 1855, and was a son of the late Dr and Mrs William J Barfield, who were among the early settlers of the Merced river section of the county, coming from Missouri in the early 50's. He spent his childhood and early manhood on the Barfield ranch for many years engaged in farming and cattle raising on an extensive scale. In the early 90's, having accumulated a competence, he retired from active farming pursuits and with his wife and daughter came to Merced to reside. In June, 1899, he was appointed City Marshal to fill the unexpired term of the late Thomas F Carrigan, and later he served for several years as Game Warden of Merced county. He was a man of the strictest integrity, of kindly genial nature and generous disposition, and he had a multitude of friends throughout the county who will miss the pleasant smile and the cordial greeting for which he was noted.
Surviving relatives are his widow, Mrs Flora Barfield of this city, Mrs Nina B Wigginton of Oakland, and a grandson, Allan Wigginton, also a resident of Oakland.
For many years Mr Barfield had been an honored member of Yosemite Lodge No 99 F&AM of this city, and the officers of this lodge conducted the impressive funeral rites of the Masonic fraternity, the services being held in the chapel of Welch & Griffin at 1 o'clock Monday afternoon and being attended by a large gathering of friends and acquaintances. Internment was in the Masonic cemetery. The pall bearers were J S Jones, W E Landram, E T Cunningham, H S Shaffer, John H Simonson and John Czerny.
