James Green, my great-grandfather, was born in Ohio. He married Anna Louise Oddson in July 1910 in Cottonwood County, Minnesota. They had 13 children, my grandma Eunice was their 12th child. He and his brood had settled in Saint Paul, Minnesota by 1930. He was a foreman for the Minnesota transfer railroad, retiring in 1952. He died in Saint Paul in January 1955. His death certificate lists his parents as Miles Green and Elizabeth Scott. In census records, James listed his father's birthplace as Ireland and his mother's as Ohio. For years James was my most frustrating "Brick Wall". I could find absolutely no census records of James before 1920, and no records at all (other than his death certificate) about his parents. I recently took the Ancestry DNA test and it linked me genetically to other descendants of Miles Sylvester Murphy (from Ireland) and Mary Elizabeth Scott (from Ohio). James had told his family that his parents' names were Miles Green and Elizabeth Scott. It all started to make sense as to why James Green couldn't be found in previous censuses; It was because his name wasn't really James Green! The family of Miles Murphy and Mary Elizabeth Scott had several children. One, in particular, William Rice Murphy, born in January 1877, left Crawford County, Ohio sometime between 1900-1910 and was never to be seen again. Some family members say that it may have been because of an argument between William and his father Miles. Whatever the reason, William Rice Murphy, left his family, changed his name and birth date, and never looked back. I wish I knew why he felt he had to leave his family forever but we may never know the real reason since all his family members have now passed away. Although the reason must have been painful for him, I am glad that the mystery of who my great-grandfather really was has been discovered.
