Sidney Alford Thompson, 84, died at home in Prattville on April 12, 2021 surrounded by her family and husband of 65 years, Billy Cooper Thompson.
Sid, as she was known to friends and family, was born in Crenshaw County, Alabama on July 14, 1936. She attended public schools in Luverne and graduated from Luverne High School in 1955. She and Billy married in Honolulu, Hawaii, later that year.
The Thompson family moved to Prattville in 1974. Sid and Billy joined the First United Methodist Church of Prattville. Sid became an active member of the Capital City Republican Women, served on various chamber of commerce and community boards, and was a founding member of the SOCIA club of Prattville.
Sid became a trailblazer for women in Autauga County politics. She served on the Prattville City Council from 1988 to 1996, and represented District 4. Sid was voted by her colleagues to serve as city council president in 1992--the first woman to hold that position.
In 2008, Sid was elected to represent District 1 as a County Commissioner--the first woman ever elected to the Autauga County Commission. She became vice chair of the County Commission in November, 2016, and served until November of 2020.
Sid is survived by her husband, two daughters, Sheryl Thompson Garrett (Joseph) and Debra Thompson Reynolds, one son, Judge William Thompson, (Melinda Rainey) and their children. Grandchildren include: Vicky Sharman (Steve), Clint Radcliff, Mason Radcliff (Norma), Gardner Garrett, Warren Garrett (Michelle), Cooper Garrett, Warner Thompson (Rebecca), Nat Thompson, and Lily Thompson. Great grandchildren include: Makayla (John), Taly, Leah, Natalie, Allie, Kennedy, and one great-great grandson, Lorenzo.
