Thomas, a lawyer by occupation, enlisted age 28 in Amherst County as a Private in Capt. Whitehurst's Company (the "Amherst Mounted Rangers"), Virginia Cavalry (later redesignated Company "E", 2nd Virginia Cavalry) on 23 May 1861. He was promoted 1st Sergeant of the Company in October 1861, and elected 1st Lieutenant in April 1862.

At the battle of Port Republic in June 1862, he attempted to cross the North River at Port Republic on horseback, while his unit was conducting a tactical withdrawal. The bridge there had just been burned, and he came under mistaken fire from his own troops. The horse foundered and fell; he could not swim, and his body was never recovered.
