A representative of the younger generation of farmers in LeRoy township is Lawrence Countryman, who is successfully carrying on general agricultural pursuits upon an eighty acre tract of land, constituting a part of the farm upon which he was born September 10, 1883. His parents were Charles and Violette (Farnum) Countryman. They were married in Belvidere, Illinois, February 12, 1859. At an early period in the development of Bremer county they removed westward and settled upon the farm where their son, Lawrence, now makes his home. For many years the father successfully tilled the fields, continuing upon the old homestead until his death, which occurred October 8, 1891. His widow afterward removed to Sumner, where she too passed away. In their family were eight children: Samuel, who was born October 20, 1862, and was killed by the accidental discharge of a gun April 18, 1901; Mrs. Ina M. Abbott, who was born February 22, 1864, and died in September, 1902; Louisa May, who was born April 2, 1865, and is now the wife of Ed Barker of Fredericksburg, Iowa; Perry E., who was born December 7, 1867, and is a resident of Minnesota; George A., who was born July 24, 1871, and makes his home in LeRoy township; Maggie S., who was born November 8, 1875, and died February 9, 1892; Ralph, who was born August 9, 1879, and is living in LeRoy township; and Lawrence, the subject of this review.
Lawrence Countryman was reared at home and acquired his education in the district schools of LeRoy township. Two years before his mother's death he moved into Sumner and there resided for two years. At the end of that time he bought eighty acres of the homestead and upon this property has since engaged in dairy farming, following practical and modern methods in the conduct of his steadily growing interests.
In 1903, Mr. Countryman was united in marriage to Miss Helene Zacharias, who was born in Germany, August 11, 1883, a daughter of Martin and Caroline Zacharias, residents of Bremer county. Mr. and Mrs. Countryman became the parents of three children: Florence, who died at the age of six; a child, who died in infancy; and Avis. Mr. Countryman is a native son of whom LeRoy township has every reason to be proud, for he has proven himself reliable and capable in business, public-spirited in matters of citizenship and honorable and upright in all relations of life.
