Bertha D. Best-Gilliland, 100, of Hope died at 3:05 a.m. Friday, March 12, 1999, at Brown County Community Care Center in Nashville. She had been ill 10 years.

She was a former sales clerk and home caregiver and a member of Columbus Church of Christ.

Funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Norman Funeral Home at Hope with Rich Gant officiating. Calling will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. until service time Monday. Burial will be at South Park Cemetery in Greensburg.

She was born in Washington County, Ky., Oct. 13, 1898, the daughter of Ben and Katie Taylor Hendren. She married James Herman Best in 1914. He died in August 1955. She married Walter J. Gilliland Feb. 14, 1959. He died June 3, 1973.

Survivors include sons, Buell Best of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Herman E. Best of Bloomington; stepsons, John Gilliland of Nashville and Harold Gilliland of Hope; a stepdaughter, Norma Clouse of Hope; half sisters, Sarah Hollray and Beva Kennedy of Harrodsburg, Ky.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a half sister, Ada Styers.
