Rexford C. "Rex" Hammond, 88, of Greencastle, died Monday at Hickory Creek at Sunset, Greencastle.

Mr. Hammond was born Dec. 31, 1919, in Putnam County to John Raymond "Rex" and Ruth B. (Blue) Hammond. He was married to Nellie Marie Neese on Oct. 28, 1939, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 31, 1987. He then married Shirley Cassada on June 6, 1999, and she survives.

He was a member of Big Walnut Baptist Church, Reelsville, and was an organizer and coach for Reelsville Little League and Pee Wee Football. He was a city mail carrier for Greencastle and a rural mail carrier for Reelsville.

Also surviving are two daughters, Betty Scaggs and husband Don and Beverly Walker of Plainfield; five sons, Larry and Gregory Hammond, both of Boca Raton, Fla., Stephen Eugene Hammond and wife Mary F. of Charleston, Ill., David Blanton of Greencastle and Donnie Blanton of Reelsville; seven sisters, Betty Neal of Deale, Md., Mary New of Greencastle, Helen Overton of Tucson, Ariz., Virginia Willsey of Indianapolis; Peggy Girton of Reelsville, Nancy Fogle of Greencastle and Catherine Cawley of Coloma, Mich.; three brothers, Joseph W. Hammond of West Monroe, La., William C. Hammond of Winter Haven, Fla. And Edward N. Hammond of Avon; 10 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Alpha Marie Boatright, Patricia Cox, Mildred Curtis and Pauline Coleman; two brothers, Samuel David Hammond and John R. Hammond; and a grandson, Rexford Benjamin Hammond.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Whitaker Funeral Home, Cloverdale, with Pastor Mike Goss and the Rev. Stephen Allen Hammond officiating. Calling will be Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Cloverdale Cemetery.
