CMSgt. Richard R. Brown, 70, of San Antonio, Texas, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, at Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland AFB, Texas.

Born Aug. 23, 1936, in New Paris, Ohio, he was the son of William R. and Bonita E. Brown. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1954 at the age of 17 and was honorably discharged at the rank of chief master sergeant in 1981 after serving more than 26 years.

He served in the medical field for nearly his entire career and attained the prominent positions of NCOIC of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, and Superintendent of the Department of Medicine at Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland AFB. During his career, the treatment he provided affected countless people, and he twice rendered first aid at the scene of an auto accident, saving the lives of two people.

Following his distinguished career in the Air Force, he earned a bachelor of business management degree from Saint Mary's University in San Antonio. He worked for the city of San Antonio for a time, and later for the Northside Independent School District before fully retiring in 1998. He had since filled his days volunteering his talents to Marbach Christian Church where he and his family have been members since 1973.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Willard H. Brown; and sister, Wilma Jean Brown.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Karen C. Brown; daughter, Sharen R. Brown of Houston, Texas; two sons, Chris (Deborah) Brown of Houston, and Brian (Terri) Brown of Waldorf, Md.; four grandchildren, Alana Rose and Ashlyn Lauren of Houston, and Megan Cheyenne and Allison Mackenzie of Waldorf, Md.; two sisters, Carolyn M. Schaar of New Madison, Ohio, and Donna Lou Griffith of Florida; four brothers, W. Gilvie Brown and Phillip C. Brown, both of New Paris, Joseph E. Brown of Richmond, Ind., and F. Dean Brown of Washington, D.C.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service was held Thursday, February 8, at Marbach Christian Church, San Antonio, Texas, with Pastor Jim Reisser officiating. A graveside service, with full military honors, was held at the City Cemetery of Carmen, Okla., on Sunday Feb. 11. Castle Ridge Mortuary, San Antonio, Texas, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions made payable to "Georgetown University Hospital Foundation" can be sent to the Office of Philanthropy, Georgetown University Hospital, Hospital Administration, 3800 Reservoir Road, Washington, D.C. 20007. Donations should indicate "Transplant Center" in the memo portion of the check.
