While there, he attended George Washington University for a couple of years, enrolling in the school of Cartography and Hydrography. In 1942, Maury enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to duty on the U.S.S. Panamint - Amphibious Force Flagship 13 as 1st Class cartographer during W.W.II. Her voyage and missions during W.W.II traveled over 30,000 miles in two oceans, the Atlantic and Pacific; and five seas: Caribbean, Coral, East China and Japan and Bering. She, with her crew, crossed the equator twice and the dateline four times. For Maury's tour of duty, he received four commendation medals of honor. After his discharge from the Navy, Maury returned to Indianapolis to work for the Ransburg Corporation (now ITW Corporation) as their chief systems design engineer staying 37 years before retiring in 1983. He returned as a consultant for six more years. He was a charter member of Resurrection Lutheran Church located at 445 East Stop 11 Road in Indianapolis in its formative years, serving as treasurer and councilman for two years.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Dorothy (Balfour) Alexander of 44 years; and their three daughters and their spouses: Lisa and Jackie Hope of Indpls, Marisa and Richard Long of Greenwood, and Sheila and Greg Meador of Franklin, whom he loved dearly.
