A family Bible record and letter of 1867 indicate that Sarah died "a few months before" - 3 Jan 1861- they had been turned out of their house due to the converging armies of the North and the South and had to flee to safety. Her mother stored some of Sarah's clothes and personal family objects such as letters in a box and left them for a few days but they were destroyed or robbed of them.
