Asaph K. Allen, Esq was born in August 1801 and was a pioneer in Western New York. He came to Kansas Territory in 1856 and moved his family to Lawrence, K.T. in 1860. He and his wife had the following children:

Lyman Allen, Norman Allen, Asaph Allen [Jr.], Elmore Allen and a daughter who married a Mr. Perley.

Mr. Asaph Allen, Sr. operated a hardware business in downtown Lawrence. At the time of the Quantrill Raid of Lawrence, on 21 Aug 1863, Mr. Allen, Sr. was living alone on Kentucky Street. When several raiders came to his door and demanded he come outside he refused and threatened them not to come inside as he was armed. This stance undoubtedly saved his life. The Raid inflicted a heavy loss of lives and property in Lawrence including the destruction of his hardware store and stock of goods.

Mr. Allen was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church serving at different times as a class leader, trustee and steward.
