F, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry, and re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer February 2, 1864, at Brandy Station, Virginia. He was shot in the upper jaw at the battle of Monocacy July 9, 1864 (allegedly a ricochet off his rifle barrel), and hospitalized. On February 3, 1864, he transferred to Co. A, 16th Veteran Reserve Corps, from where he was discharged by surgeon's certificate April 9, 1865. He is on every roster by his middle name.
He married Mary Jane Culp in 1866 and fathered Ida Minatree (b. 02/??/69), Charles William (b. 05/08/71), Mary Rose E. (b. 05/??/74 - married Burtus C. Hammers), Emma L. (b. 02/18/76), Samuel Austin (b. 02/26/79), Enetta Blanche (b. 01/03/82), and Lelia Grace (b. 07/09/88 - married Mervin T. Shealer). A mason later in life, he was a post-war member of Skelly Post No. 9, G.A.R.. He applied for his pension and is in the 1860 census by his middle name. Cause of death listed as "organic heart disease" with "chronic nephritis" a contributing factor.
