Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Roger was the eldest child and only son of the late Rolla Otto and Florine Ray Durbin. The family lived in Fort Wayne, Indiana until the post-War era, when Rolla and Florine bought a new house on US 30 in New Haven, Indiana.
He married Jeanette Schrader, of New Haven, Indiana, in 1956. They were married for over fifty years and lived in Philadelphia and Lancaster, Pennsylvania, moved to Richmond, Indiana, and Hamilton, Ohio before returning to Lancaster in 1969, settling permanently in this beloved area.
Roger was an engineer at AMP for 20 years and previously worked for Hamilton Watch and Schick Electric. He served in the US Army and was a graduate of New Haven High School in 1952 and Purdue University in 1956. He was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church in Lancaster.
Roger's lifelong passion was the All-American Soap Box Derby. Countless hours designing, planning, and helping several boys and a few girls build their gravity-drag machines. Eight kids, champs in their local races between 1964-2002, made it to the All-American race in Akron, OH due to Roger's advice and expertise. His family has happy memories of annual camping trips to Cuyahoga Falls, OH, which coincided with the race.
Surviving are his wife, Jeanette, 6 children; ten grandchildren, and a sister. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, and a granddaughter, Tara Lynn Young.
