Harry Arnold Abercrombie, Jr was born April 2, 1958, a date forever recorded on the family calendar with the note, "Ha! Ha! Not April Fool's!" That yearly reminder may have accounted for his dry sense of humor. Harry, who was born in Toppenish, passed October 31, 2023. The son of Harry Arnold Abercombie and Maizie Letlow Abercrombie, Harry was their third child and first son. A quiet boy, he showed a talent early on for taking things apart and putting them back together. Every Tonka truck received at Christmas was transformed within days into something even better. He rode horses and as a teenager competed in rodeo events. He attended school in Centerville and Toppenish, graduating from Mosier High School in 1976 in Mosier, Ore. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and trained in the mechanics division, a training that led to a lifetime career of driving and caring for trucks. While in the Army he received recognition for Expert Rifle and Hand Grenade. He was proud of his service. He worked in the cattle and lumber industry until his retirement. He was a member of the Iron Angels car club and enjoyed working on Volkswagen Beetles. He loved shooting guns from his collection and he enjoyed fishing. He enjoyed long afternoons visiting with friends having coffee at the Wolf Den in Wapato sharing stories and opinions. He will be well remembered by his many friends, especially Gary Archer and Alan Quantrille. Harry is survived by his children, Brandi Anderson of Burke, Va., Kaylee (Austin) Kettler of Irrigon, Ore., and Harry Arnold Abercombie III (Sydnie O'Banion) of Stanfield, Ore.; grandchildren, Soren Anderson, Lilah, Magnolia and Greyson Kettler; sisters, Julia Hart of Sunnyside, Peggy Randall of Goldendale, Tina (Ron) Schumacher of Toppenish, and his brother and best friend Everett (Bonnie) Abercrombie of Toppenish; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Harry is preceded in death by his mother Maize Abercrombie of Goldendale, father Harry Arnold Abercrombie of Toppenish, brother Larry Abercrombie of Toppenish, and son-in-law Anje Anderson of Virginia. Graveside services will be held for Harry Abercrombie on Monday, March 25 at 1 p.m. at the Wapato Reservation Cemetery. A celebration of life potluck will follow at the Toppenish Eagles.
