John married Jacqueline Houston in Sanford on July 2, 1949. John was proud of his service to his country. He served in the Army with the 36th Mechanized Calvary under General George Patton in Germany during World War II. Following his military service, John worked in the Sanford mills for several years and was custodian at Sanford Junior High School. For many years he was a scout leader for Troop 327 of Sanford, sponsored by St. Ignatius Church. He also volunteered with the Cub Scouts and the Sea Scouts of America in the Sanford area. He was a member of the Sanford Elks Lodge. John and Jackie Parent were honored as Maine Foster Parents of the Year in the 1970s. As a couple, they took 35 foster children into their home through the years. He is survived by his wife, one son, two grandchildren, and many foster children and foster grandchildren.
