Cheechov, John James

April 27, 1930 - Dec. 30, 2004
John James Cheechov, 74, of Vacaville, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at his home following a long illness.

John was born on April 27, 1930, in rural Elmira. He was the third child of immigrant parents who migrated from Russia in the early 1900s and established their lives as farmers in the Elmira area. John went to elementary school in Elmira and Vacaville High School. He started his own hay hauling business at the age of 16. Following a two-year stint in the Army, serving in the Korean War, he renewed his love of trucking and operated Cheechov Trucking for 12 years. He moved his family from Elmira to Woodland in 1962 and continued in the trucking business until 1972 when he moved his family to Smith Valley, Nevada and worked as the head mechanic for John Ascuaga's ranching operations, then worked at Smith Valley Tractor Company and renewed his love of John Deere tractors. He returned to Vacaville in 1976 following an illness. His last years were spent farming with his brother Jack at the family's ranch and working on restoring John Deere's.

Mr. Cheechov is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mildred; by his three sons, Alec and his wife Debie, of Jasper, Oregon, Andrew and his wife Suzanne, of Wellington, Nevada, and Chester of Vacaville; a daughter Pamela and her husband Mark, of Vacaville; two grandsons, Jake Cheechov of Oregon and A.J. Cheechov of Nevada; three granddaughters, Sarah McCauley of Nevada, Amy Morris of Vallejo, and Allysa Thomas of Vacaville; brother, Jack of Vacaville; sisters Pearl Rhorke of Sacramento and Shirley Romanoff of Bakersfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Nellie Cheechov; brothers George and Jim; and grandson Tyrel.
