Elmira Man, 48 Dies

ELMIRA - George James Cheechov, 48, of Hawkins Road, a land leveler and member of a prominent pioneering family in this area, collapsed and died Friday afternoon while helping to fight a fire which slopped over from a controlled burn southeast of here.

Dixon Fire Chief William Fairfield said Cheechov was preparing to level ground on the Vassar property at Brown and Robben Roads seven miles south of Dixon to put the land in row crop production after a 300-acre controlled burn to clear stubble on the site was completed.

The controlled burn slopped over at the south end onto several additional acres and Cheechov, a member of the Volunteer Elmira Fire Department, was helping to fight the fire when he was stricken.

The Dixon Rescue Unit administered emergency aid and Cheechov was rushed by ambulance to Intercommunity Hospital in Fairfield, where he was pronounced dead at 4:40 p.m.

Assistant county coroner John Moriarity said exact cause of death wouldn't be known until an autopsy.
