James W. Mee was born in Calais de Pas, France of English parents: Richard Mee (1810-?) and Ann Taylor (1806-1840 in Loughborough, Leicester, England). Richard Mee's last known presence was in the Jackson Co., OR, 1880 census, living with his son, Thomas Mee on Thompson Creek (brother of James Wesley Mee).

James, along with his brothers Thomas, Henry, & George, immigrated to the U.S. in 1850.

James and his brother, Thomas emigrated to Oregon via California.

In the 1860 census, he was listed as a miner; he later turned to farming. The rousing fiddle music of James Mee, who had brought his violin West w/him on the wagon train, was in great demand in the Applegate Valley and in Jacksonville.

MILITARY: He served in Company I, 1st Oregon Infantry, 15 Jan. 1864 - 19 July 1867, 2 years, 7 months. His pension record states that he enlisted as a Private on 15 Jan. 1864 and was discharged 19 July 1867. His military records show that he was 31 years old, stood 6 feet, had a light complexion, gray eyes (hazel?) and brown hair.

However, in the "Declaration of Recruit", it states that James desired to volunteer as a Soldier in the Army of the United States for a term of Three Years, that he was 31, and he enlisted in Jacksonville, Oregon on 15 Jan. 1865. The witness is O.A. Stearns. He was enlisted by 2nd Lt. F.B. Sprague.

At the time of his enlistment, he resided in Applegate, Jackson Co., Oregon. He was mustered in on 28 Feb. 1865 at Camp Baker, Oregon. Another record states he was mustered in at Camp Baker on 15 Jan. 1865 with a bounty of $100 paid and due $200.

The record shows he was mustered in in April 1865, receiving a re-enlistment bonus of $100. He as appointed a Corporal on 4 April 1865.

In Mar & April, 1866 he is shown on a "Detachment Muster Roll at Ft. Klamath, Oregon, during which time he served on daily duty as Sergeant of police; May & June, 1866, he was stationed at Ft. Klamath, Oregon although the record shows he was "absent"; that he was on "detached service as per Order 44, Ft. Klamath."


James married Mary Jane Darneille Zumwalt on 11 Nov. 1867 in Missouri Flat, Applegate Valley, Jackson Co., Oregon at Anderson Hugh Darneille's home, Mary Jane's parents.

Mary Jane Darneille Zumwalt had one daughter from her Zumwalt marriage. James and Mary Jane had 12 children from 1868-1895, with 9 living by 1900.

He became a naturalized U.S. citizen 3 Aug. 1868, Jackson Co., OR; he was in U.S. since 1844 (note 1900 census states 1850).

There was another son, Jasper T. Mee, b. 13 Mar. 1874 not found in this census. He was alive in 1895. Family says he died from tuberculosis but no death date known. Last known photo of him is posted on his father's memorial. See opposite.


James Wesley Mee farmed on Thompson Creek, in the Applegate area. In the 1900 U.S. Census, his occupation was that of a placer miner.

Mary had 12 children, 9 living. Their daughter Rachel, and her husband, George C. Larimore and their two children, James Newton Larimore and Verda M. Larimore, and George's son from a previous marriage, Matthew Larimore were living next door to James & Mary.

Also living near the Mees were James & Sarah Louden w/their sons, John and William who were 27 & 29, respectively. James Louden was b. in KY and Sarah in MO. She'd had 5 children, all living. James was a farmer.

There is a peak in the Thompson Creek area known as James Mee Peak.


James was reknown in the Applegate Valley for his fiddle playing. He often played at Orlando Rose's dance hall. James' daughter, Ida Florence Mee, married Orlando's son Frederick Rose.


James Wesley Mee applied for a pension for his Civil War service on 4 June 1907

He was originally buried with no headstone. His granddaughter (son George Henry Mee's daughter) Juanita Mee Gacek Richards arranged for the military marker.



Note: Daughter Martha Ann married Louden (son of James & Sarah Lowden/Louden), Kaiser, and George Hoover. She had daughters Cora & Dora Louden and Willa Kaiser. Martha was b. 27 June 1868 in Applegate, Jackson Co., OR and d. 2 Jan. 1951 in Alameda Co., Calif.

Daughter Alice Mee Mansfield Bingham is buried in the Mountain View Cemetery, Beaumont, Riverside Co., CA, Mem. #77578730.

Note: Brother George Mee is buried at the Mount Olive Cemetery, Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois.

Brother Henry Mee is buried in the City View Cem., Salem, Marion Co., Oregon.

Brother Thomas Mee is buried at the Masonic Cem., Grants Pass, Josephine Co., Oregon.
