He was a veteran of the American Revolution, as was his father Robert Swain, serving in the Militia before and after the fall of Charleston. John Swain, nor his dependants, did not receive a Pension for his Revolutionary War services. On the 4th of June, 1785 - John Swain received Forty Pounds, 5 / 8 1/2 stlg. for Militia Duty before and after the reduction of Charleston.

"SWAIN, JOHN. He served in the militia after the fall of Charleston. A. A. 7554; S 77."

"Stub Entries to Indents, Issued in Payment of Claims Against South Carolina Growing Out of the Revolution, Books R-T, ed. by A. S. Salley, Jr. in 1917, p. 118"
No. 77 - Issued the 4th of June 1785 to Mr. John SWAIN for Forty Pounds, 5/8 1/2 Stlg. for Militia Duty before & since the reduction of Charleston, pr account audited -- Principal lbs. 40.. 5.. 8 1/2 Annual interest lbs. 2..16..4"
