Earl Chester King was born 19 Feb 1893 to Archibald Pelham "Pell" King and Mary Eleanor "Molly" Patterson King, farmers in Stilwell, Johnson County, Arkansas, USA. Today their farm would probably be considered to be in the Ludwig community area - for a frame of reference, the New King Cemetery was located on their land, back behind their farmhouse.
As children, Earl and his future wife Myrtle both attended the Clear Spring School. Earl's older sister Bertha Myrtle King also attended Clear Spring School. This school was located in the northwest Ludwig community, about one mile northwest of Hwy 21.
On 24 Dec 1914, Bertha was married to Andrew Irl Gammill of Clarksville. They lived on West Main Street, in the location of the now unused old Public School Bus Garage, which is located down the hill from the old Clarksville High School that faces West Cherry Street.
Earl first earned a living by farming in peach orchards and other crops. He also had a brief employment as a Presbyterian Minister and school teacher.
During World War I, Earl served in the U.S. Infantry in France.
On 29 Jun 1918 Earl married Myrtle King in Johnson County. Myrtle is the daughter of Jess King and Barbara Anderson Harris King. To Myrtle and Earl were born three daughters:
Their first born, Gladys Earlene King, lived only for a short time, from 25 Dec 1920 to 22 Jun 1922. Gladys is buried in the New King Cemetery.
Eileen M. King was born 28 Jul 1923. She married Frederick A. "Freddie" Cobb. Living in Fort Smith, Arkansas, Freddie and Eileen had four children: David T., Sharon, Cynthia, and Randy.
Their third child, Barbara E. King, was born 2 Oct 1930. Barbara married Robert M. "Bob" Kymer on 6 Nov 1949. Bob and Barbara had three children in Fort Smith. Patti Jo, Janet Lee who was born 18 Jul 1953, died 22 Oct 2004, and Richard M. "Ricky".
After the war, Earl worked for a number of years with his brother-in-law, Irl Gammill, in the A.I. Gammill Grocery Store in Clarksville, Arkansas. This store was located on the corner of West Main Street and North College Avenue, directly across College from where the old Strand Theater used to stand. (The Strand and some other businesses have been replaced by the Clarksville Light & Water Company buinding.)
During the Great Depression he worked for the W.P.A., a public works administration program. He also worked as an assistant to a traveling Veterinarian.
Earl's wife, Myrtle, died in Pulaski County, Arkansas, on 24 Apr 1933 and is buried in the New King Cemetery.
On 1 Jul 1936 Earl married for a second time to Clarice Piles. However, this marriage did not work out.
In 1937 Earl moved to Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas. Earl's World War II Draft Registration Card shows that he is 5'5" tall, weighs 136 lb, and has brown hair & eyes. He works at Mansfield Lumber Co. located at 321 Wheeler Avenue in Fort Smith, and lives nearby at 307 Wheeler Ave. He later became a truck driver for Packard Lumber Co. in Fort Smith, a job Earl held until his death from a heart attack on 23 Dec 1946.
