Samuel was born on August 13, 1800 in Westmoreland county, the son of Charles August and Jane Giebner. Soon after that the family moved to Mercer County.

Sometime before 1830, he married Elizabeth L. Crill. They had seven children: Jane Elizabeth, John Crill, Sarah Jane (Nickum), Mary Elizabeth (Conway), Amanda Malissa (King), Mary Anadua (Graham) and an infant child who died at birth. Jane Elizabeth and John Crill both died at a young age. They also raised a niece, Emeline.

He was a well known chair maker, not only in that area but in other states. He had apprentices working under him including Emeline. Later on he became a furniture dealer. In 1883, he retired from the furniture business at the age of 82. He had started in the business at Mercer in 1826, or 56 years ago.

His first wife, Elizabeth Crill, passed away on April 30, 1867. Sometime after her death, he married Elizabeth, last name unknown. Samuel passed away on November 6, 1887.
