Martha is the sixth child of John and Nancy Kitchens Browning. According to an article in the Benton Evening News in 1962, she was the first white female settler on record to be born in Franklin County, Illinois. She was born "on the side of a trail enroute from Jordan's Fort in the southeast part of Franklin County to her family's new homesite at Browning's Hill located west of Benton. Her birthplace was near the site of Zeigler which then did not exist." Her twin brothers James K and William R, born December 23, 1810 were the first white twins born in the county.

"Patsey" was an original member of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church founded July 11, 1829. Her name is on the cornerstone along with her parents. Her father was the church minister.

On November 10, 1850 Patsey, 38 year old widow of Calvin Jones, married Robert C "Bob" Moore who was 19 years of age. Bob's parents are Robert T and Sarah Moore. Although there is quite a difference in their ages, Bob and Patsey had two sons together, William R and Joseph A "Joe" Moore, and were married until her death in 1893.
